Patton Genius for War A Carlo D'Este Books

"Patton" A Genius for War " is an outstanding biography of General George S. Patton. After seeing some less than glowing critical reviews of this book, I was hesitant to read it, expecting it to be over-long, somewhat disjointed and unorganized. But, I plunged ahead anyway, and found the book to be a genuinely pleasant surprise - superbly written, richly detailed, balanced, and obviously well researched and organized. The portrait of Patton which emerges is that of a man destined for greatness on the field of battle from the beginning. Here is seen the scion of a Virginia family steeped in military tradition since the Civil War (two ancestors died as heroes to the Confederacy during that conflict). Here is the young man with a tremendous intellect and drive to succeed; suffering from, and successfully compensating for, dyslexia and feelings of inadequacy brought on by this disability. And, here is the army officer who believed he was destined for greatness, demonstrating a natural genius for war throughout his long military career; a highly patriotic, proud, and profane general, capable of quickly moving an entire army across Europe; yet afflicted with the hubris which ultimately led to his firing as Third Army commander at the end of World War II. "Patton: A Genius of War" is a wonderful biography of a highly complex and yet deeply flawed man. For readers interested in getting beyond the image of Patton presented by the movie, this book is a must read.

Patton Genius for War A Carlo D'Este Books Reviews

I have to say I was initially a schniz disappointed. I have read other books by Mr. D'Este and at first thought this a bit superficial in research and deficient in writing.
Then I a) put my snoot into the notes, bibliography and index, and realized how much effort Mr. D'Este put into this book and b) read War as I Knew It ... which told me Patton chose to be a Sphinx, which amazingly complicates the biographer's job.
I now consider this book the best available on a most enigmatic man.
We, as Americans, should feel priviliged such a man was one of us.
Do not hesitate to buy this book. Once you read it, please join me in trying to spread the word as to what an insanely great American Gen. George S. Patton was.
By way of degrees of separation, I feel honored my son has crossed tracks with those of Patton's troops at Ft. Irwin three generations apart.
Mike
... "This is revisionism at its very best" from the New York Times Book Review

And as expected, this Patton biography choice is the best ever written and a must read for the history deep diver seeking to engage the Patton legend in exquisite, fact finding detail.

I better understand Patton after this deep dive. Enough to know that his incredible results were required to overcome his personality. And in fact, he was terrific and got the job done.. A sure evidence of Patton's ability is easily evidenced by Patton's replacement Clark who would burn through considerably more tens of thousands US lives and years of campaign for no strategic result.

Patton's post mortem critics spoke so poorly of the man that it's a wonder that Patton remains in the common tongue. The author discusses the Eisenhower, Bradley , Montgomery autobiographical opinions for the readers own judgement.

I frankly have no idea how one can find a more complete and researched biography. You will most certainly gain a changed opinion, one way or another about the General at many levels.
So many people think of that character George C. Scott gave us in the 1971 movie "Patton". That character, while interesting, was not at all George Patton. D'Este addresses this in this book, If you really want to know the real George Patton, there is no better single book, than this one. The movie tapped my appetite to want to know more about this man-- D'Estes' book brings this man to life for those of us young enough to consider WWII history. Patton's fore-bearers were mostly from Scotland and settled in VA, though Patton himself grew up in CA after most of the men in his family were killed fighting for VA in the Civil War-- this book inspired my last 12 years reading voraciously about the Civil War. Patton was a decedent of the Scotsman Hugh Mercer who rode with General Washington in Revolutionary times. Fredricksburg, VA was a town full of rogue Scotsman hiding from the English Crown for decades. Patton's people come from these people. Patton was very dyslexic and thought to be somewhat dim-witted as a kid-- his writing from school are included in this book-- Patton had great depth and was full of ideas and went through life compensating for what at the time was not recognized as a disability. How the man graduated from The US Military Academy at West Point is to me a mystery-- his writing was pretty bad, yet he had great depth and was highly intelligent. Since reading this book, I've read 8-10 other books on Patton-- this one is the best and most comprehensive and most interesting and fact-driven... meticulously footnoted too. If you are buying for someone who is an American History or War History buff-- this book should be in their library. Anyone who considers himself and over-achiever in life can appreciate George Patton from this book. Anyone who really admires personal achievement and greatness can appreciate this book. It is a demonstration of American greatness. Patton was driver and demanded more out of a man than the man knew he could achieve. A trip to Europe created my opportunity to visit Patton's grave site in Hamm, Luxembourg-- the sight of burial for men who fought the Battle of the Bulge. This book inspired me to leave the General a cigar at his headstone. Enjoy the book and feel your appetite for more on Patton and American greatness ignite.
