This 5th book in the Dark Angels series continues the back story of Risa, a half Aedh energy being and half Helki werewolf, attempting to discover the keys that can open up the portals between the realms. Her relationship with Azriel, the reaper tasked with helping her, takes a dramatic turn in more ways than one.

But of course Madeline Hunter, head of the Directorate and leading member of the vampire council still has a hold on Risa and orders her to investigate the gruesome death of Hunter's lover. The new threat is a dark spirit who takes on the form of a spider - and it needs food to breed. And in this story we see just how scary and powerful Hunter can be.

And there are other things that occur that will have a great impact on upcoming stories. And one great piece of good news is that Risa discovers who killed her mother and why. There are a number of sex scenes, but most of them aren't especially detailed. Although we do experience how reapers have sex via energy. That one is very detailed, and wow.

Get ready for a ride because there is a lot going on and a lot for Risa to deal with; plenty of action and danger as well as a wide range of emotions. Risa is ever evolving; something that works to her advantage in some cases, but is also scaring her and I can appreciate her character more because of it. Readers of the Riley Jensen series will be happy to see some face time with Riley, Rhoan and Quinn.

The prior book was beginning to feel somewhat stagnant. This story really shakes things up. Do not try to read this if you haven't read the prior books in the series. It won't work well as a standalone book. Start with Darkness Unbound.

It was a good story and. cleared up some lose ends, but was not happy with the Risa. She whined and was way too angry all of the time and it was like a broken record that came across as very immature and selfish, instead of self sacrificing which I think is what the author was after. Yep, her life is out of control, but instead of trying to get control and maybe being up front with the people around her she lies and tries to hide her activities just like a child/teenager does to avoid getting into trouble. And then end of the book basically ends with a temper tantrum. Hope she grows up in the next book, otherwise I think I have to stop reading this series.
I seem to be in the minority but i was disappointed with the installment of the series. I loved Keri Arthur's storytelling since Riley but there were so may times in this installment where i was so frustrated i would have thrown the book...if not for the fact that it's in the form of an e-book in my work phone. lol. I felt Risa was making mistakes and moves she noramlly wouldn't or jsut plain old doing some dumb stuff. Ris is a bad a$$ no doubt about it but brother, come on.

To be lured into the warehouse like that, to STILL give Lucian that much of a benefit of a doubt throughout the story (Azriel is jealous but he's not stupid..listen to the man), and most of all if she can't tell tall, dark and reaper is in love with her by now she needs to switch sides. She has been so stubborn about not really going there when it comes to the possibility of the two of them and the fact that he might love her.

That being said, there were some great surprises, some closure, and little bit more information on Hunter. I am very interested to see where things will play out when it comes to Illianna, hints are throwing but you are still left wondering.

I jsut felt that hte story didn't really move and Risa didn't grow. And this si normally one of the series i read that i can't wait to tear into. I really want to give it 4 stars, but it was just a bit too mehhh for me. Hoping th next installment shifts things back into gear.
If I were judging this book against the Author's prior series, I would give it a 3-Star rating (OK, but nothing to rave about). Risa does not hold a candle to Riley, as far as I'm concerned. But this is a review of Book Five in the life of Risa, so I'll admit that, as much as I usually want to choke some sense into the girl, Risa is slowly developing into an interesting character. Interesting, yes; but I still want to choke her. I am loving the storyline more and more, though--so 4-Stars from me.

To be fair, I'll admit that the poor girl's life really sucks in some ways. If something can go wrong, it will. And she feels responsible for everything that does go wrong. But geez, she could stop looking at the negative all the time and appreciate certain things that don't suck. Like the handsome Reaper in her life. And her evolving powers and abilities. And her good friends.

Still, the plot is good, the action is terrific, and the world is fascinating. It keeps my interest until the very last page, and keeps me wanting to read more.
And I’m out. I binge read all the Riley books in about 2 weeks and started doing the same with these. I was excited she “fast forwarded” the books to Risa, she seemed like she’d be a fun character and it was nice to still be in the same world. By book 3 I was starting to slow my reading and realizing Risa was, well, kind of an idiot. By this book, she’s not only an idiot but also really annoying. At this point I have to blame the author, the character just became too ridiculous. I kept forgetting she’s supposed to be 28 since she talks and acts like she’s 17 with no growth through any of the events of the books. I managed to skim through this book. Eh. I read spoilers for the next books to get an idea of what was coming, not interesting enough for me to bother. Quite diaspointing, Azriel’s character was highly enjoyable. I’d like a prequel book about him please! Anyway, read the Riley books, they’re awesome. These books are just a two book plot painful stretched into 7 books.
